How to Lay Rubber Mulch

Friday 28th of June 2019

Lay this celebrated surface that is made up of recycled rubber and enjoy a safe, beautiful and durable ground for the kids to play on.

Rubber Mulch is a trusty surface that makes an ideal ground for playgrounds and sports. It is a soft surface that has been designed for increased safety, in addition to that it also provides other benefits that the alternatives do not.

It impedes the growth of weed, which is a positive because it ensures that the ground is more robust and essentially lowers the chances of it being ruined or affected by weeds or moss growth.

Mulch generally lasts years and many have there’s for around a decade before renewing, this saves money and proves as a worthy investment. It does not absorb rain and enables water to reach plants and roots- it also doesn’t attract bugs, another reason that this surface is sure to last for years to come.

Our Installation Process

We have a long list of experienced professionals that specialise in surface installation, for various safety surfaces.

Before laying rubber shred or any other surface for that matter, there are a number of things to consider. Prior to laying the ground or mixing the material, it’s important to check the current surface, the weather and check the equipment.

There are specific regulations that need to be met for safety and to also ensure that the flooring lasts. Our team will speak to you on the phone before any talk of appointments or installation. In that time, they can advise you, answer your questions and we’ll also have questions of our own, we’ll need to know about the area, the playground equipment, plans and whether the current surface is suitable.

Installing rubber bonded mulch is done by mixing loose rubber chippings and resin before then laying out the material on the current ground.

Our installation process is straightforward and can be organised today, here are the steps that we take:

  • Firstly, we await your contact- you can fill in the contact form on this page and we will get in touch.
  • We call your number, our professional consultants will be able to guide you through process and help give an idea of the price and overall process.
  • We then organise our experts to come and walk through the area with you, in this time we can begin the quote, ensure it is safe and help you decide on the surface you need. We also work out the safety regulations including the critical fall height.
  • We then work a schedule that suits you and fit your favourite spec.

Can I Put Rubber Mulch Over Grass?

Yes, bonded rubber mulch can be laid over grass. It’s not as simple as putting the rubber ground straight onto the grass though.

You will need to mow the grass and also rid the ground of any weeds or dandelions. These types of roots can be damaging to the ground. Dandelions come back year after year in the same root and when the mulch has been laid, it can be ruined and compromised by dandelions or other plants.

Ensure that you put a surface underneath the mulch even if it’s rolled up newspaper. Getting this process wrong could come back to haunt you and that is why we are constantly called out to rectify people’s mess. We encourage all customers to use professional assistance to get the most out of your surface. You need people with safety regulations, experience and certifications- that way you can be safe in the knowledge that you are getting premium workmanship.

How to Install Bonded Rubber Mulch

Here we offer you a general overview of the installation process and what’s required. If you wish to know how to install bonded rubber mulch then read on.

Once again, we recommend that you don’t carry out the entire installation preparation on your own, you should employ or at least consult professionals.

Work Out CFH

CFH stands for critical fall height and it’s something that our team take very seriously. Everybody should be doing the same, as it is a safety regulation and ensures that soft surfaces such as bonded mulch remain safe.

The experts calculate the highest potential fall, whether that is from a climbing frame or swing and then they ensure the correct depth to cushion the floor.

For example- 40mm depth for a potential 1.7 metre fall height.

Mix Binder & Mulch Ratio

Binder and mulch ratios differ but generally they’re around 20% PU binder to whatever amount of mulch you utilise. Once combining, allow five minutes to mix.

Using Rubber Mulch in Playgrounds

As you may be aware, rubber shred is prevalent in playgrounds. This is no coincidence; it is due to the safety features of this rubber ground. It is super soft and is made to a depth that accommodates the equipment that is also installed or planned to be installed in the playground.

There are a number of other benefits too- including its long lasting design that remains durable and also its beautiful style that can be easily integrated into playgrounds. It doesn’t require much maintenance and is easy to have installed by our professionals.
